The most important aspect of car maintenance is changing the oil; but what if you're in a rush - can you add oil to a hot engine? Here's everthing you need to know about adding engine oil to your car.

CarBuzz advises enlisting the help of a professional for all regular maintenance and services. Below are some expert suggestions on how to properly add engine oil to your vehicle. Keep in mind that this should not substitute for scheduled services or other necessary maintenance tasks.

The Importance of Oil in Engine Functionality

Even for the less mechanically inclined, it's pretty common knowledge that car engines require engine oil to function. If you're wondering what role oil plays in your engine, you're asking the right questions. First and foremost, oil is a lubricator, and lubrication is essential in keeping your engine working efficiently. From crankshafts to camshafts, there are dozens of moving parts within your engine, and without oil, the friction and wear and tear on all those parts would mean your engine wouldn't function long enough to be useful. Friction also causes heat.

Thus, one of the main functions of engine oil is to keep the internal temperatures of an engine low. Irreversible damage will occur when an engine overheats; yes, coolant in the cooling system also plays a part here, but engine oil runs hotter and is pumped through the engine components to assist in the cooling process. Oil flowing around the engine also helps to keep seals supple, instead of sitting dry and going brittle; when this happens, oil leaks start to occur. Finally, oil also includes a number of key additives that clean the internals of an engine as the liquid flows around inside.

The Proper Quantity of Oil Is Crucial for a Joyful, Well-Functioning Engine

When it comes to topping up or changing your engine oil, the right amount to add depends on how much is still in the engine, and what the capacity of your vehicle is. This varies, and you'll find the oil capacity figure in your car's owner's manual, but by way of example, here are examples of how it can differ on two cars in one lineup:

  • 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost – 6 quarts with a filter
  • 2024 Ford Mustang GT – 10 quarts with a filter

Insufficient oil levels can lead to inadequate lubrication, resulting in knocking or ticking sounds and potential overheating issues. If the situation is not addressed promptly, it can culminate in a hefty repair expense. On the flip side, overfilling the engine with oil can also be detrimental. Excess oil raises the oil pressure beyond safe limits, putting undue stress on internal components like the crankshaft and seals.

How to Add Oil to Your Car in 4 Simple Steps

This is one of the simplest routine maintenance tasks you can perform for your vehicle.

So, when it comes to changing, topping up, or simply checking your engine oil, it's imperative to consult the owner's manual and ensure the right amount is going in – be sure to double-check by dipping the dipstick and reading the new level. More modern cars will sometimes do without this, and instead you can check the oil level on the trip computer. When unsure, consult a mechanic beforehand – even if it's just for advice.

These Oily Warning Signs Indicate That Your Vehicle's Engine Requires Care

Regularly checking your oil level is an essential aspect of being a vehicle owner, yet many of us tend to neglect this task – even though we really shouldn't. Luckily, there are several warning signs that can alert you to potential problems. However, keep in mind that these indicators may not apply universally to all vehicles, regardless of their age, so it's important to consult your owner's manual for specific guidance.

Citrus Oil Glow

Keep an eye out for an orange or yellow oil warning light on your dashboard. This usually signifies that the oil level is low and needs to be replenished. The light is designed to alert you before the situation becomes critical, but it's important to respond quickly if it lights up to prevent the level from decreasing further. It's worth noting that a low oil light doesn't automatically indicate an oil leak; engines naturally consume a small amount of oil during regular operation.

Crimson Oil Indicator

A red or blinking oil light typically signifies low oil pressure rather than merely a low oil level. Insufficient oil pressure can rapidly cause internal harm, so it is recommended to safely pull over and turn off the engine at the earliest opportunity.

Azure Mist

Blue smoke from your exhaust indicates that the engine is burning oil. Some cars are known for burning oil, and even if your car is one of those, it's still best to try and stop it from happening to help prolong engine life. If you do have blue smoke from your exhaust, be sure to check your oil level regularly, as the level will drop through continued use.

What Could Cause My Car to Smoke After an Oil Change?

There are several reasons why your car might be emitting smoke after an oil change. Here are some key factors to consider.

Engine Bay with Smoke

Smoke emanating from beneath the hood can indicate various issues, but it is frequently a sign of a coolant or oil leak. Each type of leak has its own unique odor and requires prompt attention. A coolant leak may result in engine overheating, while an oil leak can also cause similar overheating concerns, along with a host of other potential problems.

Loud Motor

A ticking or knocking noise coming from your engine compartment is a sign that should not be overlooked. It often suggests that your fluid levels may be low, leading to inadequate lubrication of the engine components. If you notice this sound, it’s important to check it out promptly.

Pouring Oil into a Hot Engine

Adding oil to an engine

Halfords' YouTube channel

Adding oil to a hot engine is generally not recommended. Nonetheless, there are situations where waiting for the engine to cool is not feasible, and in those cases, it is acceptable to proceed. Ideally, oil should be added when the engine is at a cooler temperature for several reasons:

  • The risk of hot oil splashing and burning you
  • Cold oil being added to hot oil may not mix as well, leading to inconsistent viscosities
  • Oil expands when hot, and so the reading on your dipstick will not read true

How long should you wait for an engine to cool down before adding oil? Typically, when you're topping off oil in a hot engine, you're likely in a hurry, making it unrealistic to wait for it to cool down entirely. However, if you can pause for about 10 to 15 minutes to allow the engine temperature to decrease, that would be beneficial. Additionally, keeping the hood open during this time can aid in the cooling process.

What occurs if you add oil to an overheated engine?

Is it safe to add oil to your car when the engine is hot? While there are some risks involved, like thermal shock from the cold oil mixing with the hot oil and the potential for splashing hot oil on yourself, these concerns are generally manageable. In most cases, it should be perfectly fine. However, it's advisable to let the engine cool down if you can, to minimize any risks.

Is it safe to add oil while the engine is running?

The same principle holds true in this situation – you can certainly add oil to an engine that is currently running, but doing so raises the likelihood of getting burned by splashing oil. Additionally, there's a greater chance of oil splattering into the engine compartment, which can cause unpleasant odors and smoke to emit from under the hood.

Pedestrian stunned by drivers' bold actions in bike lane: 'As a cyclist, this infuriates me so much...'

View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Image Source: iStock One Reddit post showed what may have been a typical winter day in Montréal, Canada — one filled with snow and ice. However, it was also the day after Christmas, also known as Boxing Day, and the cars in the photo didn't seem to care about how they were violating bike lane rules. Like Black Friday in the United States, Boxing Day on Dec. 26 in Canada is the time for people to go downtown for huge shopping discounts. Unless they plan to watch one of the major hockey events that day or chill with family, many decide to fight traffic to reach stores before dawn.  View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Image Source: Reddit In Toronto, the traffic related to the holiday in 2024 was so bad the Ontario Provincial Police had to close a portion of Highway 401, as Global News reported. The Boxing Day traffic in Vancouver was so equally brutal that the Vancouver Sun reported it took 90 minutes to cross Arthur Laing Bridge. Regrettably, the congested traffic observed also reveals that drivers are utilizing the bike lane.  A typical bike lane or path is narrow enough for safe bike travel. Therefore, when cars are present, they block the area for those it was meant for. Montréal drivers can correctly use some shared designated lanes marked by a bicycle pictogram or a road sign with a car and bike sharing the road.  When people reconsider their role in car dominance, they can save money by biking for free or paying less for gas by leaving the car at home when possible. Taking public transport has saved Americans an average of $1,102 monthly or $13,218 annually, according to the American Public Transportation Association. Fewer cars on the road means reduced carbon pollution from dirty fuels. Like most major cities, Montréal has an extensive public transport system to consider — with a 24-hour bus system and metro connecting 68 stations. According to Our World In Data, using the train over a car for medium-length distances can reduce pollution by 80%. One comment written in French translates to "that's absolutely pathetic." "As a cyclist, this makes me so f****** angry," wrote another. 🗣️ Are you concerned about the air quality in your community? 🗳️ Make your selection to view the outcomes and share your thoughts! Hollister approves the return of the biker rally.

City council decides to bring back July 4 celebration tradition View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Motorcyclists gather in Hollister during a previous motorcycle rally. The Hollister Independence Rally is scheduled to make its comeback during the Fourth of July weekend, marking its first appearance in town since 2017. At the meeting on January 7, the city council reached a unanimous decision to approve and sanction the motorcycle rally scheduled for 2025 in downtown Hollister. City Manager David Mirrione is in talks with the promoter, Roadshows, Inc., to finalize a contract for organizing the event.  Mayor Roxanne Stephens expressed her enthusiasm following the council's decision, stating, “We’re thrilled to be moving closer to reviving our beloved Independence Rally tradition. Hollister is recognized globally for this event, and it’s clear that the majority of our residents are in favor of it. We’re optimistic about making this a reality for the community.” City officials estimate that hosting this year's Independence Rally will cost the municipality as much as $300,000. This expenditure is anticipated to deplete the city's budget, leaving insufficient funds to organize the traditional Fourth of July fireworks display.  Nevertheless, Stephens mentioned that the city is continuing to "look into alternative options to support the July 4 fireworks display" alongside the motorcycle rally.  City officials will keep the council informed in the upcoming months regarding contract discussions and various operational factors—such as safety—pertaining to the Independence Rally.  Since the city began officially sponsoring it in 1997, Hollister's annual Independence Day motorcycle rally in downtown has attracted significant numbers of bikers and onlookers during the summer holiday. The origins of the rally can be traced back over 70 years, beginning as a casual meet-up organized by the local biker community in Hollister.  Once a yearly tradition, the most recent official rally event occurred in 2017. Since then, a combination of financial issues and the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted efforts to organize another rally.  In 2022, the residents of Hollister decisively supported Measure T, an advisory proposition that inquired whether they wished to see the Independence Rally return to the downtown area during the Fourth of July weekend. The measure received a strong endorsement, with 63% of voters in favor.  A large number of residents gathered at the council meeting on January 7 to voice their enthusiasm for the upcoming 2025 Independence Rally. Those from the community who addressed the council were unanimously in favor of the city endorsing the event.  Rally enthusiasts highlighted the event's clear economic benefits for local enterprises and emphasized the perks of maintaining a well-established tradition that attracts attendees from beyond Hollister.  Mike Corbin, the founder of Corbin Motorcycle Saddles located in Hollister, expressed his gratitude to the council for their consideration of hosting a rally in 2025.  Corbin remarked, "The previous motorcycle rallies in Hollister were all organized with a strong sense of cooperation."  Corbin and other analysts remarked that the city should not anticipate significant turnout for this year's rally, primarily due to the limited time available for organizing and advertising the event ahead of July 4.

BMW is discontinuing that unusual feature you probably never utilized.

It seems that gesture control didn't gain much traction in popularity after all. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Back in 2015 BMW unveiled a function called gesture control for the then-new 7 Series. You could spin your finger to adjust the volume, flick left or right to change a song, and other features best served by a button. The Bavarian automaker has apparently realized this, as it's just announced at CES it's killing gesture control. It's actually a little more nuanced than that, as BMW Blog reports. The company feels that its new voice control system has advanced considerably due to the integration of artificial intelligence, which makes gestures unnecessary. Likewise, it admits that not many people used the gesture control feature in the first place.  That seems logical given its inherent qualities. The gesture control capability is nearly undetectable unless you're aware of its existence, and even then, its utility is quite limited. While it can impress at gatherings, its effectiveness is ultimately surpassed by other control methods. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. BMW is dropping the feature now because it just introduced entirely new software and hardware for its upcoming Neue Klasse line of vehicles. Featuring both electric and internal-combustion drivetrains, the Neue Klasse cars are a departure from BMW's existing lineup, featuring new underpinnings, updated exterior styling, and, you guessed it, more sophisticated interior tech. This technology features a pillar-to-pillar heads-up display and minimal physical buttons. The steering wheel has also transitioned entirely to capacitive touch controls. It's still uncertain if the automaker will continue with this approach, as some other manufacturers are reintroducing buttons in their vehicles or keeping them for essential functions. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. The dashboard of the Twingo E-Tech pays homage to the round design reminiscent of the 1990s model. Renault has revealed a redesigned interior for its upcoming budget-friendly urban battery-electric Twingo E-Tech, which aims to be priced below $21,000. The vehicle, initially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show 2024, makes its debut at this week’s Brussels Motor Show featuring a revamped interior, setting the stage for mass production in 2026. Inspired by the Twingo's inaugural model released in 1992, the interior design features a nostalgic aesthetic with a floating cylindrical dashboard that reflects the iconic shape of the original vehicle. It showcases a 7.0-inch (17.8-cm) digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch (25.7-cm) central multimedia display, positioned next to three buttons for the air conditioning system, along with the red hazard warning light button encased in a translucent bubble, reminiscent of the original Twingo. The area beneath the dashboard and the gap between the front seats offer storage for bags and daily items, while a flat tray located under the cylindrical dashboard spans the entire width of the cabin, making it convenient to access small essentials. The color selections draw inspiration from the classic Twingo, harmonizing the exterior hues with delicate accents on the front door panels and the dashboard on the passenger side. It remains uncertain if the tinted cork flooring showcased in the concept vehicle will be included in the final production, but Renault assures that this eco-friendly material boasts both resilience and longevity. Modular seating emphasizes flexibility, featuring a rear bench that can slide and fold in two equal 50/50 segments, optimizing the vehicle's 5-door configuration. The interior is further illuminated by a spacious, rounded glass roof. Notable convenience features comprise a front headrest equipped with a magnetic section, allowing rear passengers to securely attach their phones, as well as an elastic strap that serves as a map pocket, conveniently holding a water bottle within easy reach. Exterior modifications feature a lowered front air intake, more compact rear wheel arch extensions, and newly designed black bumpers showcasing a 3D-printed honeycomb design. The front door handles now lack an illuminated trim, a quarter-window has been introduced adjacent to the side mirrors, and the design of the taillights has been updated to reflect the shape of the half-moon LED headlights.
